Andy the ambulance was purchased
by the Katy Fire and EMS as a teaching aid for children. Andy
is a remote control ambulance that is interactive with the children.
Andy is equipped with a working siren, emergency lights, head
and taillights, a tape player, along with many more moving parts.
Andy also has a microphone and speaker
in his bumper. This microphone is used to hear the children. Kids
can talk to Andy and allow a fire fighter to hear their questions
and comments, then reply through the speaker giving the children
the impression they are actually talking to Andy. The emergency
lights and sirens get the attention of the kids along with moving
eyes on Andy that blink and move left and right. The tape player
on Andy can be used for pre-recorded lessons or play music during
an intermission while children are filing in or out of the room.
Andy is fully remote controlled so that firefighters do not have
to be close while the children are being taught.
Andy is a unique training tool that has
proved invaluable when trying to talk to children on their level.
