Paint A Plug Program

With the cooperation of the members of the Katy volunteer fire department, employees of the City of Katy, and the Keep Katy Beautiful Committee, fire hydrants in the City of Katy have been sanded and repainted with a bright red and pearl paint.

Hours of hard labor and lots of hands at work, proved to be resourceful in the tiresome effort of repainting fire hydrants. The first painting was in April 2002. The Katy Girls Softball Association volunteered to paint the fire hydrants. KKB advertised the project in the newspaper and as a result over 100 volunteers showed up and 90 plugs were painted.

The second paint a plug was in the fall of 2002 and once again the project was advertised in the newspaper. Dull, dingy, multicolored fire hydrants spotted the City of Katy for years. With the aid of various citizens, these hydrants are now highly visible which is essential when an emergency demands water. Volunteer families and students who were trying to get volunteer hour credits for school arrived and painted numerous fire plugs. In most cases, a blue reflective marker was also placed in the middle of the road. These markers produce a reflection from the headlight of a vehicle when driving down the road.

The third installment of the project was in the spring of 2003 when a local Boy Scout approached the KKB committee with an interest in painting plugs for his Eagle Scout project. He organized a group of 10 scouts to help and gather materials needed. They worked for 6 hours and painted 40 plugs.
The last paint a plug was held in the fall of 2003. Volunteers from Second Baptist Church in Katy asked for volunteer opportunities for their Sunday school classes. Twelve men and women painted 30 fireplugs. This is an ongoing project of the KKB with over 500 fireplugs inside the City of Katy alone. Continued maintenance is needed to maintain these hydrants and this is a great opportunity to get volunteer experience.
